Crabapple for the Birds and Winter Colour. A Monday Moment

crabapple winter birds

Sunshine and light misty showers this Winter Monday morning here in Mayo. I feel no cold this morning as I walk around the garden in my PJ’s, dressing gown and wellingtons, all is still, there is no breeze.

There are still loads of fruit on the branches of the ornamental crabapple tree. These are wonderful trees for gardens and the smaller fruit makes is easier for the birds to eat particularly robins, starlings, greenfinches and thrushes.

The fruit add little hanging drops of bright colour all winter long on the branches and soon it will be the longest night. The Sun then rises higher again in the sky and before you know it Spring will be here. These Crabapple trees are very early in producing lovely little spring blossoms which are beneficial for the bees. So there you have it, –      “the Birds and the Bees.”
