The weather is fabulous here in county Mayo at present so I spend most of the day outside in the garden at Haremoon Cottage. In the mornings just pottering around mostly working on the vegetable plot while the afternoon I spend doodling, reading, listening to bird song and admiring the last of the daffodils and the newly blooming tulips.
I have been looking into GMO’s (genetically modified organisms) just lately and last week I came across this newly published book by Steven Druker “Altered Genes, Twisted Truth” with the subtitle; (that says it all) How the Venture to Genetically Engineer Our Food Has Subverted Science, Corrupted Government, and Systematically Deceived the Public.
I find that this book is very informative giving a clear and in depth understanding of the problems of GMO’s and a historical record of the irresponsible behaviour of many eminent scientists and scientific institutions which is recklessly subjecting our health and the health of the environment to unacceptable risks. I especially like the analogies Druker makes in the chapters covering Computer Software Science
As Druker states’…“genetic engineers are taking huge and very complex information systems (the genomes of plants), and they are making radical revisions to them based on a very deficient knowledge base…there’s nowhere near the same parallel kind of testing in the case of genetically engineered food… (and its) far short of the rigor with which life-critical software programs are tested after every revision… The genetic engineers cannot control where the packet of new genetic information (the DNA) is going. It’s randomly inserted. It’s a radical revision in several other ways too. They have very little understanding about those informational systems, because after all, they didn’t design them. We know that they’re far more complex and far more intricately interrelated than any human-made software.”
This book comes at a crucial time with new EU legislation and TTIP negotiations Ireland along with other EU members are on the precipice of making sweeping changes which will allow member states to opt out of the blockade that has barred GMO’s from the EU until now.
I encourage you to read this book, I have found it the best book on the topic and in the foreword Dame Jane Goodall commends it for countering the disinformation and providing much-needed clarity.
She also states;
“I shall urge everyone I know who cares about life on earth, and the future of their children, and children’s children, to read it. It will go a long way toward dispelling the confusion and delusion that has been created regarding the genetic engineering process and the foods it produces.”
Do not accept the premise that GM Foods are safe. There has never been a basis for such a view.
